I feel like I didn’t read much this month because some were fairly forgettable (Twisted Games), but some were definitely not (James, By Any Other Name, All Fours). All Fours was the most expected book I read this month, I truly was like WHAT AM I READING?! I enjoyed the BRADs I read this month, and I’ve been enjoying reading on my kindle more at night - so I’ve seen an uptick in my Kindle/physical book reading.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Star Reads:
James (Audible) - This book is tough to read but incredibly important. It’s beautifully written, telling the story of Huckleberry Finn from Jim's perspective. The depiction of racism is harsh, but it's a necessary reflection of the past. This book is an excellent choice for a book club, with plenty to discuss.
By Any Other Name (Audible) - As a Jodi Picoult fan, this book did not disappoint! It follows Melina Green, a writer investigating whether her ancestor, Emilia Pisano, was behind some of Shakespeare’s work. Set in dual timelines—present day and the 1600s—the story blends love, struggle, and discussions about the value of women's contributions. Similar to how I always think of Jake Epping from 11/22/63 when I think of the Kennedy Assassination, I will always think of Emilia Pisano when I think about Shakespeare.
Other Reads
All Fours (Spotify) - I don’t quite know where to start. This book was a surprise. I knew it was about a woman embarking on a road trip, but I didn’t expect how racy, funny, emotional, raw, and sometimes heartbreaking it would be. The unnamed main character starts a road trip that ends up derailing her life. It's much racier than expected, but the story was really enjoyable.
BRADs
The Deal and The Mistake (Kindle Unlimited) - These are the first two books in the Off-Campus series, and I will definitely keep reading. In The Deal, Garrett, a hockey star, convinces Hannah to tutor him so he doesn’t lose his spot on the team. Initially resistant, Hannah (a singer) eventually falls for him, of course. The Mistake follows Logan, one of Garrett’s roommates, who meets Grace (by mistake) one night. There’s plenty of family drama and romance to keep the pages turning. Looking forward to the next few books!
Pucked (Kindle Unlimited) - Another fun hockey romance. Violet’s brother plays on an NHL team, and she meets his teammate, Alex, the captain. Naturally, romance blossoms. While this one was spicy, it didn’t get five stars because I wasn’t a fan of the euphemisms Violet uses for her body.
Big Fan (Kindle Unlimited) - The first book from 831 by Claire and Erica. It’s a quick, enjoyable story about Maya, a newly divorced political strategist, who gets approached by the team of Charlie, her old boy band crush. As they work together on Maya’s candidate’s campaign, sparks fly (because, of course, it’s a romance). I loved this book and even learned a lot about Universal Basic Income. It’s a warm hug of a read.
Cash (Kindle Unlimited) - I loved the Bald Head Island series, and Mollie was hinted at the end of the last book, and the Lucky River Ranch series has not disappointed. Mollie, a Dallas entrepreneur, inherits a ranch from her father, but to sell it, she has to live there for a year. She resists at first but eventually moves in. Her relationship with the ranch’s foreman, Cash, is rocky at the start, but predictably, they end up together. I really enjoyed this one.
Twisted Games (Kindle Unlimited Audio) - I picked this up looking for a free book on KU. I wasn’t a fan of the first Twisted book, and this one was fine. I didn’t love the fake European monarchy setting, but the romance was spicy. While I’m not rushing to read the next one, I might give it a try.
