(more than) Five Friday Faves - 1.19
the reads on Substack that are making A Day In My Life a bit more knowledgeable
(more than) Five Friday Favorites:
OK, like many of you, I am definitely in my Substack Era. I am loving reading different publications and perspectives, so this week, I thought I would share some of the Substacks that I am consistently reading, enjoying, and sharing with friends. I think
recently shared some of her faves in a post (another great follow) and loved the idea! The list below is alphabetical because I couldn’t dare pick an order.
- - I love the conversations that Kate is having around budgeting, thinking about expanding a family, habit building, and her Coffee With Kate series. I feel like I’ve gotten to know her through Instagram as well as through her newsletters, which is such a delight.
- * - Jessica was a guest on the podcast earlier this year, and I reached out to her because I’ve been a long-time follower of her newsletter. I love her content geared towards working moms, and I always feel like I learn something.
- * - This was one of my favorite things a few months ago, but I really enjoy reading Erika’s newsletter geared towards tech careers. She turned me on to Notion, and I try to implement her wrap up ritual.
- * - This one is newer to me, but I recently subscribed because every post I have read has left me thinking - last week’s post How Much Should I Track My Kid had me wondering what these conversations might look like when our kids are older. I particularly enjoy the conversations started in the threads and comments, and find myself sticking around to read those!
- - I have been following Grace’s blog back in the Sequins and Stripes days, and she has been a trusted resource since then. She has fantastic book recommendations, I always look forward to her Group Text series. The chat for her stack is VERY active, with tons of smart followers looking for recommendations.
- * - I am a huge fan of In Kind Magazine, and love that their weekly newsletters migrated onto Substack. I love the essays and conversations they share in each newsletter, and this week’s conversation with Justine Liu stuck with me all week.
- - Christina’s newsletter about getting dressed, curating your personal style, and motherhood really resonates with me in this phase of life. I am not an expert on fashion and trends, but I appreciate the way Christina approaches styling/wardrobe development for the long haul, as I am entering a phase where I want to hone my uniform. Christina was also a guest in the early days of the podcast, so if you’re newer here (welcome), and go back for a refresher!
- * - I have read many of Jo Piazza’s books and been a fan for a while but recently stumbled upon her Substack and then went into a deep hole re: Ballerina Farm, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite Substacks. There’s pop/influencer culture, personal (and very relatable) content, and other musings, really a mixed bag, but I am here. for. it.
- - Written by two best friends, Aliza and Aja, Platonic Love feels like a conversation with friends. I love how it’s written, often with some interjections, and the weekly links and longer for essay or how to. Their post about starting a great conversation is one I go back to a bunch.
- - The name for this Substack alone is worthy of a mention, but loving this newsletter from Julia @smarterinasec with additional smart reads, career tips, and other goodness to help you level up. The content is not shared elsewhere, and as a self-described rabid consumer of media, Julia finds some fantastic reads and her career advice is not to be missed. I am so excited for Julia’s episode coming out soon.
- * - This is a perennial favorite and my longest Substack relationship. I have been a paid subscriber and huge fan of Caro for a long time. Her recipes are great, her podcast is great, her Instagram is great. No notes. Some of our favorite recipes are the Sheetpan Fajitas and the BBQ Chicken Tacos. Be sure to check out Caro’s episode of A Day In Her Life.

What’s for Dinner
This week, we went heavy on the ease. I try to cook new recipes on the weekends, and this week we had a big kitchen fail. You win some, you lose some.
Sunday - Marry Me Chicken - My mom told me she’d made this for dinner with friends, and I thought it looked like a recipe my family, kids included, would eat. I made it while my husband was watching the Packers game (I am going to say it - the 4:30et football game is the worst game time) and we were tag teaming some rowdy kids. Dinner was on the last simmer, and I went upstairs to talk with my son who was having a moment, but I failed to tell my husband to turn it off soon. I came down ~15mins later and the sauce was basically evaporated and there was crust at the bottom. After I got over my frustration (not going to lie, I cried), we ate what we could joked it was more Divorce Chicken than Marry Me Chicken. That said, my son said that it was the best chicken I’d made him - so what do I know.
Monday - Brats and Fries - You can take my husband out of the midwest, but you can’t take the midwest out of him!
Tuesday - Pasta E Fagiole with Pappardelle from the Cucina Simpatica Cookbook from the freezer, cooked the noodles.
Wednesday - Shrimp with the Trader Joes Yellow Curry Simmer Sauce - I sauteed some frozen peppers and onions, and removed from the pan before cooking the shrimp. But this was a 15min meal, and was perfect after being out in the cold and skiing with my son.
Thursday - Enchiladas from the Freezer - This is a really easy, no-recipe meal that I have been making for a while. These are not “official” enchiladas, but a version we like. I will share the no-recipe recipe, but it’s essentially a shredded rotisserie chicken, zucchini, squash, and onions with green salsa.
Friday - Pizza Night
More A Day In Her Life:
ICYMI This week Nora Massey was on the podcast! Nora is so genuine and kind, and it was so fun chatting and becoming friends. We talked about a wide range of things from books and reading to Nora’s fertility experience, to parenting in the city. Such a fun conversation!
- (Episode 8) and have started ! I love to needlepoint, and Allie’s Instagram post this week got me to pick up my Tree Topper Bow canvas I have been neglecting for too long. Hoping I can finish it before Christmas - but I’ve been saying that for 2 years! The first virtual meeting is January 30 - I hope I’m able to make it!
