This month I read a ton, but when I think back on it, I don’t feel an overwhelming “Wow, that was a great month of books” like I did last month. I’ve already started June off strong with How To End A Love Story, and LOVED it. SO there’s hope for June, and there are a lot of books upcoming that I am VERY excited about - The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center, Swan Song by Elin Hilderbrand, and Summer Romance by Annabelle Monaghan.
ALSO Reminder - if you have Spotify Premium - you get 15 hours of audiobooks free per month! Definitely put that to use!
Five Star Reads:
This Summer Will Be Different (Audible) - This was my most anticipated release of May. I LOVED Carley’s first two books, I think Every Summer After is Top 10 novel for me, and this one lived up to the hype. Her writing makes me want to go to Prince Edward Island immediately, and she paints the most idyllic summer. Felix and Lucy’s story was great, I love a good illicit romance, and the friendship between Lucy and Bridget was also well done. Can’t wait until her next book.
The Paradise Problem (Libro.fm) - I don’t think I’ve ever met a Christina Lauren book I don’t like, and this one was so great. Anna and West got married in college for the cheap housing, and then they never see each other again, until his family wants her to come his sister’s elaborate wedding on a private island. I love a book that describes ridiculous opulence that I am unlikely to experience in my lifetime, and this one was a great escape and good build-up and chemistry with the main characters.
Emma of 83rd St (Libby) - A modern re-telling of Emma that was very charming! I loved the modern fashion references and the setting of NYC for this tale, and Emma and Knightly’s romance was predictable (because it’s a classic) but still very enjoyable.
The Idea of You (Audible) - This was a re-read, or technically 3rd re-read if we’re getting specific, but I love this book. I re-read after watching the movie because I wanted to watch it and enjoy them as separate items, and I think that’s got to be the way to do it. The book is so good and nuanced, and there are key differences that wouldn’t have survived on screen.
Other Reads
Among The Bros (Libby) - This is a non-fiction about the frat drug ring at the College of Charleston, and it’s fascinating. I didn’t know much about Xanax and the drug culture in colleges during that time, and I learned a lot.
Small Mercies (Libby) - This is a pick for a book club I am in, and I absolutely devoured this one. This book centers around a mother who’s daughter goes missing right around the start of bussing integration in Southie in the 1960s. I knew Boston has a deep racist history, and this book really illuminated what that looked like, through the lens of this fictional mystery. Definitely a worthwhile read.
Expiration Dates (Libby) - I have loved all of Rebecca Serle’s books, and this one was so delightful. Daphne receives a note with a name and how long the relationship will last when she meets someone romantically, and this book toys with fate, destiny, and love. I really enjoyed this one, there were some twists I didn’t see coming, and I loved the ending.
Romancing Mister Bridgerton (Audible - KU) - I was peer pressured by the friends I watched the premier with to continue reading the Bridgerton series, and I really enjoyed this one. Colin does seem a bit like a dud and a tad jealous throughout the book, but the Bridgerton world is charming.
The Rule Book (Spotify) - I maybe should have read Cheat Sheet first, but really enjoyed this story about Nora and Derek, ex-es who reunite when Nora is assigned as Derek’s agent. There’s solid chemistry and overall enjoyed it.
Some BRADs
Mister Hockey (Libby) - I think I am going to go on a hockey-BRAD hiatus. This one was OK, I wanted some more character development, but if you’re looking for a quick and spicy read, go for it.
Fangirl Down (Scribd) - This one was a tad contrived, Wells Whitaker is a former top golfer who just can’t get it together until he asks a fan, Josephine, to be his caddy in an attempt to help her make enough money to fix her golf shop. More ridiculous scenarios exist, and this book was OK. Not my favorite but an enjoyable romp.
Bride (Libby) - This one had a lot of spicy hype and I will say it lived up to it. There was a slow build-up and lots of tension between the Alpha werewolf and the Vampyre who’s been betrothed to him, then very steamy. I don’t know that I should categorize this as a BRAD because there’s a lot of world-building that went into play, but romance is definitely the focus of the book. I would say I prefer Ali Hazelwood’s STEM-focused novels to this.
