This month, I read a lot. A lot of Hockey BRADs, five novellas, but no 5 star books. (BRADs are on a different star rating in my opinion). I read more Ebooks in the past month than I think I’ve read in a while, and the novellas definitely add up.
Two Hockey BRAD Series
As mentioned above and in past months, BRADs have their own rating system. In my opinion, a good BRAD has decent plot, good romance, engaging dialog, and not completely predictable. Both of these series do not disappoint - also I love a series.
Jacksonville Rays - Pucking Around, Pucking Wild, Pucking Ever After Volume 1, Pucking Ever After Volume 2 - Audio and E-book via KindleUnlimited - This series is SPICY SPICY. The first book follows Rachel Price, the new team doctor for the Jacksonville Rays, as she discovers her incredible one-night stand from a few months ago is on the team, and then she falls in love with two other hot guys. Very different than anything I’ve ready. The second book follows Rachel’s best friend and her own Jacksonville Ray. The novellas include stories not featured in the book, but are satisfying to give you more of the stories. If you’re looking for off-the-charts spice, these are for you.
Vancouver Storm - Behind The Net, The Fake Out - E-Book via KindleUnlimited - Thanks to Nora for reminding me I’d wanted to read this series, because I haven’t been kept up late reading in a while. I love the fake dating and forbidden romance tropes and these books filled those voids. Would 100% recommend if you’re looking for a fun, sexy series.
The Casanova - Audiobook via Scribd - NOT a hockey BRAD, but continuing the Miles High series, and let me tell you, do not do this on audio. The accents were absurd.
Re-Reads
Demon Copperhead - Audiobook via Libro.FM - I bought this last year, and I was so excited to re-read it. I think I enjoyed it more the second time around as I picked up on more nuance and the witty things from the narrator. It is just so good. A heartbreaking but excellent book.
Other Reads
The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace - Audiobook via Libby - This book was a strong recommendation from
and I really enjoyed it. It is no secret from the title, there’s no happy ending. It’s tough to read, but an important read because reading the perspectives of others is what reading is all about.Acts of Violet - Audiobook via Libby - This audiobook is a large cast read, which can be a bit off-putting, but I thought was the right way for this book because it includes podcast episodes, articles etc. in addition to the different narrator perspectives. Magical realism, family and sibling dynamics, multiple perspectives, and I didn’t see the ending coming.
The Dead Romantics - Ebook via Libby - Ashley Poston does good magical realism, and this one didn’t disappoint. Florence is a romance ghost-writer who sees ghosts, and is experiencing a huge writer’s block. She loses her father and goes home to the small town she grew up in, and it’s delightful. If you like the Seven Year Slip, you’ll like this.
Good Material - Audiobook via Libby - This was a struggle to get through for me. It follows a comedian who’s broken up with his girlfriend and while a few lines were funny, it was a lot of wallowing. I didn’t love it.
Novellas
The Exception to the Rule, Worst Wingman Ever, With Any Luck - Ebook via KindleUnlimited - These are meet cute stories written by some of my favorite recent authors. I really enjoyed them as a nice palate cleanser between books and as a quick read. If you have KU, don’t miss these.
