I’ve mentioned it recently, but my kids have been really into art and crafting lately, and I absolutely love it. My youngest (2.5 years old) is now at the age where I can let her join in on most of the activities (though we’re still steering clear of perler beads for now), and I’m also learning to let go of the fear of a little mess—it’s all part of the fun!
While painting and drawing are our go-to activities, there are days when my creative energy just isn’t there. That’s why I like having some seasonally themed crafts ready to go. They’re perfect to set out on their craft table, bring along to restaurants, or quickly pull out when needed. Below are some easy fall crafts we’ve either picked up this season or had saved from last year, along with a few other activities we’re loving right now.
Five Friday Favorites:
Seasonal Stickers - These sticker crafts are always a huge hit with my kids. I love leaving them out and watching the quirky and creative things they come up with. We also have some of these, which they adore, paired with small pads of paper for them to stick on. Recently, we picked up this set that can be turned into magnets, and my son loved making his creations into something more permanent.
Perler Beads - These are such a throwback for me! I was obsessed with Perler beads as a kid, and now my son is into them too, thanks to After School activities. I ordered this set and can’t wait to start making some creations with him at home.
Watercolors - Washable paints of any kind are always a win in my book, and lately, my kids have been all about watercolors. On nice days, I set them up outside and let them paint whatever their hearts desire. The other day, they started experimenting with watercolors on paper towels, creating tie-dye patterns. I love watercolor, and recently did a Case For Making class with friends—it was such a blast!
Scratch Off Leafs - This is another fun seasonal activity my kids are into. Personally, I find the scratch-off stuff unbearable, so I let them do it outside. That way, I don’t have to deal with the scratchings all over the house or the sound of the wooden scraper on the dry black material—it makes my skin crawl!
Painting Mini Pumpkins - One of my kids' favorite fall “crafts” is painting mini pumpkins outside. They love washing the pumpkins off with sponges and starting over again. We use these paints, and the “paint and wash” cycle works well with lots of other outdoor toys too- trucks, cozy coupes, etc.! Sometimes they let the paint dry, but even when the rain washes it away, they’re excited to start fresh!
Your favorite link from last week - The Butterpants Sweatshirt (I ordered another one too!)
What’s for Dinner
Sunday - Salmon with Brocolli
Monday - Caro Chambers Peanutty Pork and Brussels from her new cookbook - this is our new easy peasy meal my kids are obsessed with
Tuesday - We had company and made Grilled Marinated Chicken from Whole Foods, Charlie Bird’s Farro Salad, Mediterranean Rice, and this Caramel Apple Pie. I cannot recommend the pie recipe because I had to make the caramel twice. I pride myself with not often ending up with kitchen fails, so this caramel made me livid. Everyone said it tasted delicious though - I will never make it again that’s for sure.
Wednesday - Out - We had an open house at the elementary school and we snuck in an early date night beforehand.
Thursday - Brats and Tots!
