The one thing I haven't been leaving the house without
I’ve spent more hours in the Boston Children’s ED over the past two weeks than I’d care to admit. And frankly, I’m done with ED visits for a while.
Last night alone, I logged about six hours there with my daughter, who broke her arm in an accident at school. We’re all exhausted. (Side note: if you’ve got tips for surviving life with a cast on a three-year-old, send them my way!)
I’m endlessly grateful to live near one of the best children’s hospitals in the country, but this visit was a tough one. The ED was packed, and apparently the hottest fall accessory for kids under ten is a cast. Sitting in a hallway bed, I couldn’t help but feel grateful our reason for being there was something fixable and minor compared to the families around us. But I won’t soon forget the moment I had to leave my daughter for a procedure under sedation. I’ve done it before, but that “your heart outside your body” feeling doesn’t get easier.
Needless to say, my tank is pretty empty this week - so apologies in advance for the brief newsletter. But you know what wasn’t empty and I would have been lost without last night? My battery pack. Truly the best purchase I’ve made this year. I have two, so one is always charged, and I rarely leave the house without one. Last night, it powered my daughter’s iPad, fully recharged my phone, and even had enough juice left to offer a charge to the mom in the hallway bed next to us.
I hope you never find yourself spending as much time in the ED as I have lately. But if you do, may you have a fully charged battery pack in your bag - it’s a lifesaver in more ways than one.
