This week’s five favorites are board game-themed. Nothing feels like a better time to play board games to me than sitting in a cabin in the mountains, by a lake, with friends and family. We LOVE board games in our house and get very competitive. Here are some of our current favorite games, including one we can play with the kids!
Five Friday Favorites:
Wingspan - If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen me posting about this recently. My husband got it for Christmas, and after watching this YouTube video to learn the rules, we started playing and it’s super fun. It seems daunting, but it’s really easy to play once you understand the basics.
Set - This was a recommendation from
, and it’s a really fun, quick-paced card game. You try to make sets of cards based on shading, shape, number, and color. I love that it is cards so very portable.Genius Squares - This is a 2 person game, but I imagine if you got a second set, you could play 4 people, and it’s a race to see who places the pieces onto the board first. It’s been a Five Friday Faves before and was a rec from
but it’s so much fun, and I feel compelled to tell you again.Settlers of Catan - This is a perennial favorite in our house, and we play with one of the expansion packs usually. This is a strategy-based resource management game. It can get heated, allegiances can be made, and relationships can become tense.
Zingo - This is a new to me game that my son and daughter absolutely loved. The bingo cards come out when you move a device, and the cards are visual, so even my daughter could get into it and match. The rounds are pretty quick, and everyone has fun.
What’s for Dinner
This week, we were home and then headed up north for some skiing.
Sunday - Chili - I made this chili in the slow cooker for my husband to eat because I was hosting my book club. I usually don’t make my husband dinner when I have other plans (because I like to encourage his independence and who has the time) but we were going skiing, and we planned to bring the chili with us.
Book Club Menu - I LOVE a book club, and I have found my way into two this year, and it sparks so much joy. I hosted this month’s book club and it was Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. If you haven’t read it, it’s such a good read. I wanted to make some food that had some tie to the book, and chose to make some 1950 appetizers, and the brownies from the show. This is what we landed on - Pigs in a Blanket, Sour Cream and Onion Dip, Finger Sandwiches (salmon and cucumber), and the Lunch Box Brownies. All were relatively easy to make ahead, but I will say the onion dip took A LOT of time to carmelize the onions.
Monday - Brats and Fries - Always a go-to dinner in our house. I always have Brats and Fries on hand in the freezer, and it’s usually ready in 30 mins. It’s also one of the few meals my husband can take complete ownership of, and this week, I let him own it while I worked out and played with the kids.
Tuesday - Pizza Night - In full transparency, I had planned on a chicken dish with a simmer sauce and rice, but we were headed out of town, and the cleaners had just come, so we didn’t really want to clean up all of the rice my daughter would inevitably fling around the kitchen, so we took the easy route and ordered takeout.
Wednesday - Baked Pasta (skiing) - When we go out of town, planning meals is one of my superpowers. Dan Pelosi has talked about this before, but I love packing up a cooler with meals for a trip. I love thinking about what travels well, what we love to eat, and what will feel good.
Thursday - Take out (skiing) - We wanted to try some food from the area, but after a day of skiing, we knew we’d all be exhausted. We ended up ordering some pizza and we were very happy with the end result.
Friday - Chili and Baked Potatoes - I made this chili over the weekend, and froze it to bring with us. Skiing and Chili are like peas and carrots. Just go together SO WELL.
