But seriously, I probably shouldn’t have brought a 848 page book on a plane
This month, far more than half of my reading was re-reading the Crescent City Series by Sarah J Maas. One of my character quirks is wanting to pre-order books from small booksellers, knowing full well, I rarely actually read a physical book, and am much more likely to read a kindle book or audiobook. However, when the most recent Crescent City book arrived before our beach vacation, I decided despite its size, it was coming.
Friends, reading an 848-page book on the beach isn’t easy, and it takes up a lot of valuable space in your carry-on or checked bag, it’s hard to hold on the beach while reading etc. I could have brought at least 2 more bathing suits in that space.
I ended up leaving it at the villa, and next year I hope it’s gone, so that I know someone chose to get enthralled in the series that has had me on the edge of my seat since the end of book 2.
Five Star Reads
Oona Out of Order - Audiobook via Libby - Loved the unique premise of the book. Oona travels each year into a different year of her life but mentally continues. Imagine all of a sudden hopping from current day to 20 years in the future and not knowing what happened in the last 20 years because you haven’t lived them yet. I loved how Oona discovered love, friendship, and family and navigating that over her time hopping.
Maybe Once, Maybe Twice - Audiobook via Libby - A really delightful story of Maggie and the loves of her life. There is some chronology hopping, and I really loved hearing how her loves developed, and how she grew throughout the years. Maggie also has synesthesia, which is when your body routes senses through more than one pathway so you can feel/smell sounds for example, and I loved the descriptions of music throughout the book.
Re-Reads
House of Earth and Blood - Audiobook via Audible - Bryce, a half-human half-fae party girl, comes home one night to find her best friend and close friends have been brutally murdered. Two years later, Bryce is asked to help solve come recent crimes, and is paired with Hunt Athalar, an enslaved angel, and there’s chemistry between them. The world that Sarah J Maas creates is incredible. There’s human and fae warring, there’s an overruling group the Asteri, it’s so good. I thought the character development was the best in this book.
House of Sky and Breath - Audiobook via Audible - Don’t want to give anything away, but the cliffhanger at the end of the book is worth it all
.
Other Reads
House of Flame and Shadow - Physical Book - Bringing this on the plane wasn’t my best move, but I really enjoyed this book. A LOT happened in the book, and I think some of it could have used a bit more development. I hope there’s a 4th.
The Fury - Physical Book - In one word, slow. I didn’t love the narrator, he was unreliable and vain. I did enjoy the twist, but it couldn’t redeem the overall book in my opinion.
BRADs
I gave both of these five stars, but BRADs have their own rating system. In my opinion, a good BRAD has decent plot, good romance, engaging dialog, and not completely predictable. I love a good series, and the Miles High Club does not disappoint. I listened to these via KindleUnlimited on Audible.
The Stopover - Audiobook via KindleUnlimited on Audible
The Takeover - Audiobook via KindleUnlimited on Audible
