December was a really fun month of reading - I read a number of books I really enjoyed, I read some fun and light hearted Christmas romance, and it felt like a strong end to 2024. I’m working on my full 2024 Reads in Review, but in 2024 I ended up reading 125 books. You can check out past month’s reads here.
Also, you may have seen on Instagram yesterday, but I am working on something really fun and romance book related! If you want to see what we’re building, follow along @pepper_books and if you have time, take our (very quick) survey here!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Star Reads:
We Begin At The End (Libby) - This is another book by the same author of last month’s favorite All The Colors of the Dark. It follows a similar pattern but is a unique story, and was one I didn’t stop thinking of for a while. It follows Duchess, a young girl and protector of her brother, and the decisions she makes. Don’t miss this one.
The Lion Women of Tehran (Libby) - A bookclub book and I am so glad because I don’t know that I would have picked it up otherwise. This book tells the tale of two girls who grow up together in Tehran and then beyond and how the political forces in Iran change their lives. The audiobook for this is beautifully narrated, and the descriptions of food in this book are perfect. I couldn’t put it down.
Blue Sisters (Libro.fm) - When Nicky, one of the Blue sisters dies, her remaining sisters are floundering a year later. This book follows Avery, Bonnie, and Lucky as they navigate their own relationships and future without Nicky. I loved this book so much - there were so many beautiful descriptions of sibling relationships and struggles, and some descriptions I wished I could just write down.
From Air (KU) - A BRAD, but a good one! This book has some great enemies —> lovers tension and then fun chemistry. The way it came together in the end was somewhat predictable for me, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
Other Reads:
The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (BOTM) - A fun holiday themed romance and mystery. Maggie was invited to a holiday with Ethan, her arch nemesis, at the home of her Mystery Writing Idol, Eleanor Ashley. There’s enemies to lovers, a murder, and a fun cozy Christmas read. It wasn’t anywhere close to the best thing I read this year, but this was a great holiday read!
BRADs
Filthy Rich Fae ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 🌶🌶 (KU) - My main gripe with this book is that it ends on a cliff hanger. I know romance CAN do that to you, but DANG do I want to know what happens. Cate makes a bargain with Lachlan Gage, one of the most important men in New Orleans, to save her brother and ends up with more than she bargained for. I did find the world a bit hard to figure out as I was reading, but I will definitely read the next book.
The Lost Fisherman ⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 🌶 (KU) - The sequel to The Naked Fisherman I read last month. It takes place 5 years later when Reese has done a lot of growing and finding her passion in midwifery, and Fisher is recovering from a near-death motorcycle accident. Oh and he’s engaged. I found this one just as morally problematic at times, but I was rooting for Fisher and Reese. Will this be the time for these star-crossed cruciverbalists?
Under The Mistletoe Series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶🌶 (KU) - Cruel Winter With You ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, Merry Ever After ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, All By My Elf ⭐️⭐️⭐️, Merriment and Mayhem ⭐️⭐️⭐️, Only Santas In The Building ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - These are all very fun and light and spicy, and were very fun to read the few days before Christmas when nothing is happening. I think my favorite spice wise was Merry Ever After, but I struggled with the new mom aspect. I thought All By My Elf was just fine. I was also annoyed that in a series of 5 short stories, two of the books had the same named female main character.
Reminder - I track my reads on Storygraph, so if you want to see what I’m reading, you can check on there!

I also felt that way about understanding the world of Filthy Rich Fae - I felt like I had to reread sometimes to figure out what this would look like in my mind, but I still thoroughly enjoyed! Also read Cruel Winter With You and thought it was a cute, quick easy read.
ok I still don't really understand the end of filthy rich fae! deff adding From Air to my TBR pile!
