August Calendar Review
What I did, read, bought, podcasted, and wore in August
In case you need to hear it: summer isn’t over yet. Sure, it’s past the “no school” prime, but tomatoes are peaking, the air is still warm, and technically fall doesn’t start until September 22. So yes, you’ve got permission to keep summering.
That said, August felt like its own perfect version of summer. It was slower, restorative, and exactly what we needed. I told my husband last night how summer-y it felt, and he laughed: “Yeah, because we were at the beach a lot.” He’s right.
We bookended August 1 and 31 at the beach, and spent nearly every weekend at my parents’ place, and managed plenty of beach time in between work and travel. Some of my favorite moments were watching the kids play with other kids at the beach and dance on the patio as the sun went down.
A highlight was meeting two podcast listeners randomly on the same day. I’m so grateful they came up to say hi, it made my week.
Another favorite moment was the Monday before school started, when I took my son into the city for the day. Just the two of us. It reminded me of our Juneteenth adventure, and I’m hoping to make it a tradition. These days with him, as he grows older, feel extra special.
Now, I’m rolling into September ready for routine, grateful for school schedules, and carrying all the good from the past few weeks with me.

What I Read?
Favorites:
Totally and Completely Fine - I love a Celebrity Normie trope, and this one was so enjoyable. It wasn’t perfect, but I love how Elissa Sussman writes complicated female characters, and while I wish there was some more time to develop some thoughts, it was so enjoyable.
My Friends - This book. I LOVE Fredrick Backman. He’s one of the authors I will read just about anything he writes. The Beartown Series was fantastic, and this book started slow - I will admit it took me a second pass to get into - but I ADORED it. Some of the descriptions he wrote felt so true to how I’ve felt things and his descriptions are beautiful. This is a tale of a girls and a piece of art, and the circumstances of that piece of art being created and the artist who created it.
Other Notables
These Summer Storms - OK, there was mystery, there was some romance (not a lot) but there was a ton of Rhode Island, and I loved it. This is a family drama focused on the obscenely wealthy Storm family, after their patriarch passes away and they’re faced with reuniting on their family island in Rhode Island.
What I Bought?
Some randoms and a lot of back to school
The Rotary Cheese Grater as recommended by my friend Bailey Walden. This thing is legit, and I agree that pre-shredded cheese isn’t nearly as good.
School Supplies - I got each kid a new backpack - the bigger one for my son, and the smaller for my daughter. I also got the standard markers, crayons etc.
Clothes for the Kids - I did the clean out for the kids recently, and inventoried what they need for the fall. I got my son a bunch of long sleeved shirts and sweatshirts from Boden. He currently has no pants, because he grew like a weed, but I’m planning to order these for him. For my daughter I ordered a few pairs of leggings. She has more long sleeved stuff available.
Shoes for the Kids - My son likes his shoes so tight they’re cutting off circulation. Finding velcro shoes that can get that tight has been tough. On the Monday before school started, I took him to DSW and we picked up any shoe he thought he might like. We had ~15 boxes, and tried on every pair, and I finally convinced him that tied shoes can get tighter than velcro. We got some of our favorite Angels shoes.
A New Button Down - I need a button down like I need a hole in the head, but I’m obsessed with this new Lands End Button Down I got. I love that it’s low in the back and the material is really solid.
Gap Pants - I need more pants that can be worn professionally, and I ordered 2 pairs of these pants. I love how professional they look but also how comfortable they are. I can think of a number of ways to wear these. I like the high neck vest that is compatible, but it’s not a F#ck Yes, so it’s a no.
I also got this shirt from Gap that I love and wore a lot this month (see below)!
What I wore?

Blue was clearly the color this month. Who knew. I am obsessed with this shirt and wore it a ton, but I can’t really link much else from these photos.
